Author Guidelines

JSC welcomes and publishes three kinds of manuscripts, though all three kinds may not appear in every issue:

  1. Research Articles   (4,000 – 8,000 words)

Articles should include a 150-200 word abstract, 6-8 keywords, and be styled and documented according to the current American Sociological Association (ASA) format.

  1. Commentary Essays   (1,500 – 2,500 words)

Essays are similar to long-form journalism that appeals to educated lay readers and serves as the public face of sociology. They comment on contemporary social and cultural issues, while avoiding sociological jargon and theoretical or statistical density. Essays do not contribute original research, though they may refer to scholarship without documenting it.

  1. Book Reviews   (1,000 – 2,000 words)

Reviews should include a brief summary of the content as well as an assessment of the book’s strengths and weaknesses, its place in critical discussion of the topic, and its contribution to the intersection of sociology and Christianity.

It is recommended that all manuscripts be examined for grammar and composition by a program such as Grammarly prior to submission.  All submissions must be made in two separate Word documents, one with the full identity of the author(s) included (name, position, and organization), and the other with the identity of the author(s) omitted.  The editor and other editorial staff reserve the right to edit submissions for length, clarity, style, and other general considerations.  All submissions must be emailed as attachments directly to Dennis Hiebert, PhD, JSC Editor, at dennis.hiebert@prov.ca and not through the submissions function of this website.  You do not need to register for the journal site (as indicated above) to send in a submission.  The deadline for submissions for the April issue is February 15, and for the October issue, August 15.

Distribution of the Journal:

Selected institutions affiliated with TRACS, ABHE, CCCU, and ATS will be notified when issues are published.

Address all correspondence to Dennis Hiebert, PhD, JSC Editor, at dennis.hiebert@prov.ca .
